Heartland United Way agencies serving Central Nebraska

Following is a list of Heartland United Way-supported agencies serving Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick counties.

The Heartland United Way office is located at 410 W. Second and can be reached by calling (308) 382-2675. Also, information is available on its Web site at www.heartlanduway.com.

Adult Basic Education 410 W. Second; contact Penny Holloway at 398-7433. Offers adult (age 16 and older) literacy, GED preparation, ESL citizenship and civics classes.

American Red Cross 404 E. Third; contact Donna Titman at 382-3790. Offers health and safety training, disaster response and emergency communication between the military and families. Collects daily volunteer blood donations.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters 424 W. Third St., contact Valerie Hinrichs at 384-3456. Provides children in need with a positive role model and support system to help them remain in school and off drugs and alcohol.

Boy Scouts of America, Overland Trails Council 2808 O'Flannagan; contact Dave Plond at 382-3717. A comprehensive youth program for boys and young adults aimed at serving others by helping instill the qualities of good character, responsibility, citizenship and personal fitness.

Central Nebraska Community Services 2525 W. Old Lincoln Hwy. in Grand Island, and 803 F St. in Central City. Contact Cheryl Holcomb at 385-5500 or the Central City office at (308) 946-3794. Provides assistance to families in crisis, linkage to resources, advocacy for services, financial counseling and goal planning; designed to be a bridge where barriers exist, through case management and other support services. Assists families, single persons, couples and the elderly.

Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism 219 W. Second; contact Connie Holmes at 385-5520. Promotes the development of healthy lifestyles and increases the community's awareness of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and addictions.

Child Care Solutions 123 S. Webb Road; contact Roxanne Vipond at 385-5900 Ext. 223. Resource and referral agency that helps parents find quality childcare and gives parenting information. Childcare providers and parents receive education on child development in both English and Spanish.

Citizen Advocacy 123 S. Locust, Suite L101; contact Diane Haney at 385-5542. Initiates and supports long-term, one-to-one advocacy relationships between private citizens and people who have disabilities.

Crisis Center 2251 N. Webb Road; contact Shellie Pointer at 382-8250. Provides services, shelter and support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, along with community education, a 24-hour crisis hotline, transportation, education and support groups.

Girl Scouts Goldenrod Council 2512 N. Webb Road; contact Kathy Andrews at 382-2020. Provides programs for girls with activities focusing on arts, out-of doors, health, understanding cultures and science. The program inspires girls with high ideals of conduct, character, patriotism and service so they may become happy and resourceful citizens.

Heartland Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) 410 W. Second; contact Diana Meyer at 385-5125. Advocated for children in the court system who have been abused or neglected. CASA recruits, screens, trains and supervises volunteers to serve as voices for children.

Hope Harbor 610 W. Division; contact Gloriann Hodson at 385-5190. Provides a centralized service system for emergency and transitional housing, meals, transportation, case management support and advocacy for displaced, homeless, near-homeless and other persons in need with the goal of assisting clients in becoming sustainable and self-sufficient.

Lutheran Family Services/Interfaith Immigration Services 1811 W. Second St., Suite 325; contact Rosa Barrios at 382-4255. Provides quality, affordable immigration legal services delivered by bilingual (English/Spanish) speaking staff.

Multicultural Coalition 504 N. Elm; contact Odalys Perez at 385-5242. Responds to the needs of new and established immigrants. Collaborates with numerous organizations to provide services to people needing assistance; also offers educational and awareness events to help citizens better understand and embrace culturally-diverse newcomers in Grand Island.

Third City Community Clinic 1107 N. Broadwell; contact Susan Aguilar at 398-5312. Provides a temporary solution to health care needs for community members who are most at risk.

YMCA 221 E. South Front St.; contact Thor Larson at 395-9622. Offers multi-purpose programs for individuals and families to enhance spiritual, mental and physical health. The focus is on physical fitness, family values and community service.

YWCA 211 E. Fonner Park Road; contact 384-9922. Works for the benefit of women and their families locally and worldwide. Its mission is to empower women and eliminate racism. Offers youth and adult self-esteem and confidence building; fitness activities; day care, preschool and after-school care for infants and children; teen-parent support mechanisms, and social and educational opportunities for all ages.
