St. Stephen's Community Center houses variety of organizations

The St. Stephen's Community Center houses 10 not-for-profit organizations at 410 W. Second, and another agency is located a block west in a building also owned by St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Agencies in the Community Center are:

* Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity (385-5510) is a non-profit, interdenominational housing ministry. Since 1992, it has built at least one home a year in partnership with a qualifying low-income family using volunteers to help build houses.

* Heartland United Way (382-2675) promotes efficiency, effectiveness and accountability by supporting 18 local agencies working to meet local needs in Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick counties.

* The Literacy Council of Grand Island (385-5515) is a volunteer organization that promotes literacy and provides resources and opportunities for individuals to learn to read, write and speak the English language.

* Heartland CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates (385-5125) uses volunteers to speak on behalf of abused or neglected children in court. They work with attorneys and social workers to review records, research information and talk to involved parties to help recommend to judges what is best for the child.

* The Grand Island Community Foundation (381-7767) is a non-profit organization that holds money for other organizations and uses the interest for scholarships and other community projects.

* Project Hunger (385-1590) has a goal to help hungry people both at home and abroad. Its two main projects are the Easter Basket Extravaganza and the Harvest Festival for World Hunger.

* Adult Basic Education (398-7446), reaches it goals through three main programs adult literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED preparation classes.

* Domestic Violence Intervention Program/Crisis Center (391-2253) is a counseling and educational program for abusive and controlling men.

* Central Mediation Center (382-7799) is a nonprofit organization providing dispute resolution services for those experiencing conflict in the family such as divorce, workplace, business or neighborhood.
