For seniors meeting certain criteria, the Meals on Wheels program provides an answer to the age-old question, "What's for dinner?"
The program is administered through Grand Island's Grand Generation Center.
Executive Director Lois Stienike said Meals on Wheels offers a delivered noon meal, Monday through Friday, to people who have recently been released from the hospital, people who are unable to function well enough to cook, or the very frail or elderly who can't cook for themselves.
"It's a restorative program," Stienike said. Referrals for the program come from physicians, friends, neighbors or family members.
Stienike said there is a suggested donation of $3 per meal. The meals are delivered by 15 to 20 volunteers, who cover seven routes in Grand Island. While the Cairo Senior Citizens Center cooks its own meals on site, the Grand Island center also caters daily to seniors in Wood River, Doniphan and Alda.
Each meal consists of one-third of the daily requirements of older adults, similar to the components in a school lunch program, said Stienike. Menus are planned with three ounces of protein, fruits, vegetables, salads, desserts, milk and bread.
