May 5 -- Cinco de Mayo is the Mexican national holiday that honors the Mexican victory over the French army at Puebla de los Angeles in 1862. A local celebration features song, dance, food, soccer and a queen contest, and is usually held at Grand Island Senior High School the weekend of or before May 5.
May and June -- Mother's Day and Father's Day celebrations are held near these holiday dates by Grand Island's El Salvadoran Committee.
Last weekend in July -- The Central Nebraska Ethnic Festival has grown into one of Grand Island's most popular events. The three-night and two-day gathering in downtown Grand Island features music dance on two stages, lots of food, educational booths and special activities for children. Street dances are held Friday and Saturday nights the weekend of the festival.
Sept. 16 -- Mexican Independence Day celebrates the day that Miguel Hidalgo delivered El Grito de Dolores, and announced the Mexican revolt against Spanish rule. An annual festivity is held at Skagway South in Grand Island.
Nov. 1-2 -- Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is an important Mexican holiday that merges pre-Columbian beliefs and modern Catholicism. Europe's All Saints' Day and the Aztec worship of the dead contribute to these two days that honor Mexico's dead. Grand Island residents with Mexican backgrounds celebrate this day and the lives of beloved family members and friends who have since passed away.
Dec. 12 -- Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, or the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, is celebrated with a feast honoring Mexico's patron saint. The Hispanic Ministry at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island observes a Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe at a December Mass.
