The Heartland Shooting Park, which opened last summer near West Husker Highway and Alda Road, offers expanded fields for sporting clay, skeet and trap shooting.

The park is owned by the Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department and is operated by the Heartland Public Shooting Park Club. It recently hired its first superintendent, Mick Bressley, a former Nebraska Game and Parks Commission employee.

The club is open to the public and members receive discounts on shooting fees.

Parks and Recreation plans to expand the park in the next two to three years to include rifle and pistol ranges and a campground area.

Parks and Recreation also has added a frisbee golf course at Stolley Park in 2004. Participants throw frisbees to hit markers, much like the traditional golfer hitting a ball toward a hole.

Health Plex Racquet Center -- 2204 Bellwood Drive; three indoor tennis courts and two outdoor tennis courts.

Heartland Shooting Park -- West Husker Highway and Alda Road; traps, skeet and shooting clays.

Hall County Park -- Located just south of the city and operated by the county; 60 acres of forested camping and picnic areas; includes hiking trails, marked blacktop for joggers and bikers, basketball court, baseball/softball field, picnic shelters and tables, grills and playground equipment.

Lincoln Park -- East Eighth and Beal; 9.3 acres; ball diamond, picnic tables, playground equipment, swimming pool, water slide, tennis court and wading pool.

Lions Club Park -- West Third and Sycamore; 1.6 acres; basketball courts, picnic tables and playground equipment.

Memorial Park -- Third and Garfield; 2.8 acres; grills, picnic tables and playground equipment.

Mormon Island State Recreation Area -- Located south of Grand Island at Highway 281 and Interstate 80; camping, fishing and swimming are available.

L.E. Ray Lake -- Blaine and Highway 34; 40 acres; swimming beach, boating, fishing, grills, playground equipment and picnic shelters and tables.

Ryder Park -- West Lincoln Highway; 97.6 acres; baseball and softball diamonds, grills, picnic shelters and tables, playground equipment and tennis courts.

Skateboard Park -- Located on the west end of Pier Park.

Sothman Park -- Brentwood and Sothman; 3.7 acres; playground equipment, tennis court, basketball and picnic shelter.

Stolley Park -- Stolley Park Road and Park Drive; 43 acres; ball diamonds, grills, horseshoe pits, picnic tables, "Kids Kingdom" playground equipment, tennis courts, basketball court, wading pool, city zoo, flower garden and frisbee golf course.

St. Joe Hiker/Biker Trail -- Stolley Park Road to Central Community College adjacent to St. Joe Branch of Union Pacific Railroad.

Beltline Hiker/Biker Trail -- Cherry and Sutherland streets to Henry Street.

Shoemaker Hiker and Biker Trail -- Shoemaker Elementary to State Street.
