Comments or concerns about community issues can be referred to an appropriate department head at City Hall or to an elected city official.

Ten residents are elected to four-year terms on the city council. Mayor Jay Vavricek, who was elected in November 2002, can be reached at City Hall, 385-5444, extension 100.

The mayor and the council meet almost every Tuesday night to discuss issues and set policies. Their business meetings are on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, while study sessions are on the first and third Tuesdays. The council meets in the council chambers at City Hall, 100 E. First.

Council members Carole Cornelius and Scott Walker represent Ward 1 in parts of northwest and central Grand Island.

Peg Gilbert and Margaret Hornady represent Ward 2 in southern Grand Island.

Bob Meyer and Fred Whitesides represent Ward 3 in eastern and east central Grand Island.

Mitch Nickerson and Jackie Pielstick represent Ward 4 in northeastern Grand Island.

Don Pauly and Joyce Haase represent Ward 5 in extreme northwestern Grand Island and northern Grand Island.

The next election for city officials will be May 2006. One council seat from each ward will be open as well as the mayor's seat.
