Hall County leads state in tornado density

The city of Grand Island derived its name from a 40-mile-long island on the multichannel Platte River. Early French fur traders named the island Le Grande Isle, and it was part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

  • Grand Island Concert Association -- This local organization is dedicated to bringing live, world-renowned groups to Grand Island. Five concerts are scheduled for the 2004-2005 season.

  • The Heartland Shooting Park, which opened last summer near West Husker Highway and Alda Road, offers expanded fields for sporting clay, skeet and trap shooting.

    The face of medicine in Grand Island will look vastly different in the coming year as St. Francis Medical Center continues a three- to five-year master building plan.

    May 5 -- Cinco de Mayo is the Mexican national holiday that honors the Mexican victory over the French army at Puebla de los Angeles in 1862. A local celebration features song, dance, food, soccer and a queen contest, and is usually held at Grand Island Senior High School the weekend of or before May 5.

    Central Nebraska Ethnic Festival

    The big three of local government consume the majority of the property taxes levied in the city of Grand Island.

    The Central Nebraska Regional Airport, under the leadership of the Hall County Airport Authority, will have completed $48 million in FAA airport improvement projects in the past five years and upcoming two years.

    Grand Island Police Department

    Grand Island's main post office is at 204 W. South Front St.

    Grand Island has a paid city fire department with four fire stations staffed around the clock. Each station has an engine company, and one is staffed with a ladder company.

    Centura Hills Golf Course

    Central Community College-Grand Island, College Park and Bellevue University provide the primary opportunities for post-secondary education in Grand Island.

    Stop by the Edith Abbott Memorial Library with one form of identification, preferably a driver's license with your current address. Fill out a library card application and you will receive your card immediately at no cost. Children 16 and older can sign for their own card but anyone under that must have a parent or legal guardian to verify the information for the person.

    Located just four minutes north of Interstate 80 at the intersection of Highways 281 and 34 is the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer.

    During the summer and fall months, two farmers' markets in Grand Island offer fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other food products.

  • The Edith Abbott Memorial Library -- (308) 385-5333, located at 211 North Washington Street (corner of Highway 30 and Washington Street). Funds from the Edith Abbott estate were the seed money for the building. The library has been at this location for 31 years. A 25,000-square feet addition is being planned with construction to begin in late 2005 or early 2006.

  • Records fell last year for both corn and soybean yields in Hall County, according to recent figures released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

    Fun for the entire family can be found throughout the year in Hall County.
